What Is a Yantra?
यन्त्र — instrument, device, diagramThe word yantra (यन्त्र) is derived from the Sanskrit root yam, meaning "to sustain, hold, or support," combined with the suffix tra, denoting an instrument. A yantra is therefore a sacred geometric diagram — an instrument that sustains and focuses divine energy.
In the Hindu and Tantric traditions, a yantra serves as the visual equivalent of a mantra. Where the mantra invokes a deity through sound, the yantra does so through form. Together, the two constitute a complete mode of worship, making the yantra a living symbol — not merely a decorative pattern, but a precise energetic map of a divine principle.
"As the body is to the soul, so the yantra is to the deity it embodies."
Yantras are typically inscribed on copper, gold, silver, or bhojpatra (birch bark), though they may also be rendered in stone, drawn on paper, or traced in sand during ritual. The geometry is never arbitrary: each triangle, lotus petal, circle, and square encodes a precise cosmological meaning rooted in the Vedic and Agamic sciences.
The Geometry of a Yantra
Most yantras share a common structural vocabulary: a central point called the bindu (the seat of the divine), surrounded by interlocking triangles, encircled by one or more lotus rings, and enclosed within a square frame called the bhupura — representing earth and the four cardinal directions. The Shri Yantra, regarded as the king of all yantras, contains nine interlocking triangles that together generate 43 smaller triangles, the entire figure arising from a single bindu.
Types of Yantras
Classified by deity, purpose, and traditionThe yantra tradition is vast. Yantras may be classified by the presiding deity, by their ritual purpose (prosperity, protection, healing, liberation), or by their origin in a particular Tantric lineage. The following represent the most widely venerated categories.
Shri Yantra / Shri Chakra
The supreme yantra of Devi Lalita Tripura Sundari. Nine interlocking triangles represent the union of Shiva and Shakti. Worshipped for abundance, beauty, and liberation (moksha).
Mahamrityunjaya Yantra
The yantra of Lord Shiva in his aspect as the conqueror of death. Used for healing, longevity, and protection from untimely death and disease.
Ganesh Yantra
Embodies Ganesha, remover of obstacles. Installed at the commencement of new ventures, businesses, and homes for success and the removal of impediments.
Kubera Yantra
The yantra of the lord of wealth. Placed in cash boxes, safes, and business premises to attract material prosperity and financial stability.
Saraswati Yantra
Dedicated to the goddess of learning and arts. Favoured by students, scholars, musicians, and artists seeking clarity, creativity, and eloquence.
Navgraha Yantra
A composite yantra containing symbols of all nine planetary deities. Used in Vedic astrology to pacify malefic planets and strengthen benefic influences in the horoscope.
Vaastu Yantra
Combines yantra geometry with Vaastu Shastra principles. Placed in a home or workplace to correct directional imbalances and restore spatial harmony.
Hanuman Yantra
Invokes the power of Hanuman for strength, courage, and protection. Particularly effective as a shield against negative energies and black magic.
Surya Yantra
The solar yantra, dedicated to the Sun deity. Used to enhance health, self-confidence, vitality, leadership qualities, and success in public life.
Guru Yantra
Dedicated to Brihaspati (Jupiter). Bestows wisdom, higher learning, spiritual growth, and the blessings of the guru–disciple lineage.
Devi Yantra
A collective term for yantras of various forms of the Divine Feminine — Durga, Kali, Lakshmi, and others — each with a specific geometric form and ritual protocol.
Rudraksha Yantra
Combines the sacred geometry of a Shiva yantra with the energetic properties of Rudraksha beads, amplifying the protective and meditative potency of both.
Significance & Use
Installation, worship, and the science behind the formPranapratishtha — Consecration
A yantra does not become active merely by being drawn or purchased. Traditional practice requires pranapratishtha — a ritual of consecration in which the presiding deity is invoked into the form through mantra, breath, and intention, transforming the geometric diagram into a living seat of divine presence.
Yantra and Mantra Together
The fullest practice pairs the yantra with its associated mantra. The mantra vibrates in the realm of sound; the yantra holds the corresponding form in the realm of sight. Together they create a complete yantra-mantra sadhana (spiritual discipline) that integrates the practitioner's inner awareness with the outer symbol.
Placement and Direction
Each yantra has specific placement rules derived from Vaastu Shastra and Tantra Shastra. The Shri Yantra, for instance, is ideally placed facing east in the puja room or on the altar. The Kubera Yantra faces north, the direction of wealth. Incorrect placement is held to neutralise or even reverse the yantra's effects — underscoring the precision that the tradition demands.
The Bindu: Seed of All Form
At the centre of every yantra lies the bindu — a point of zero dimension that symbolises the transcendent, unmanifest absolute. All the geometry radiates outward from this point as creation radiates from pure consciousness. Meditating upon the bindu is said to reverse this outward movement, drawing the practitioner's awareness back toward the source.
